Perspectives on business capabilities

Many companies engage in business capability modelling, which isn’t a standardized activity.

Modelling your organization’s business capabilities can really help you align your enterprise architecture with your business model.

Consider these two models (the universal business model and the enterprise architecture canvas):

The business model illustrates how (business) capabilities are the engine in your business model execution. The capabilities are manifested by processes that define how to execute the business model and resources that actually execute these processes.

The enterprise architecture canvas illustrates how architectural resources are organized to enable business model execution.

Merging the universal business model and the enterprise architecture canvas you arrive at the following meta model:

While it would be great to have a specialized tool for managing enterprise architecture information in this structure, no such tool exists. I’m slowly building one called entities, but until I finish it, I’m confined to write a traditional document.
