Localization is the ability to select language and country-specific date and time formats used in the user interface.
This ability needs to be taken into account in the graphical layout of the user interface as different languages have different average word lengths. Also, whether users can switch languages on-the-fly or not impacts which controls need to be available in screens and impacts the behind-the-scenes design of the code.
