Solution overview

This chapter presents a context view of the solution (context viewpoint).

The solution overview shows the major elements of the system, and its connections with other (external) systems as well as what it’s used for by the organization (roles, departments etc).

A solution overview is best presented using a context model, which could look like this:

The illustration shows an example context model from the factors solution architecture document.

The context model is rarely accurate, but still says a lot about how the solution serves the business, which type of architecture and technologies are in place, its complexity and size, and which people in the organization use it in their work.

The context model should always be accompanied by text that summaries the above mentions characteristics, ensuring that readers less familiar with context models can still grasp the nature of the solution, the architecture of which is more detailed described in the rest of this document.
